Q/A: Is it true that bhakti cannot be performed without varṇāṣrama?

Q: I have a thought. Please correct me if I am wrong. I have often heard devotees saying that devotees are not able to practise bhakti properly because they are not following varṇāṣrama. I have heard that the problems with bhakti arise because varṇāṣrama is not established properly.

A: Bhakti and varṇāṣrama are two separate paths with two separate destinations. Bhakti does not depend on varṇāṣrama.

Q: I am beginning to realise that devotees are not seeing result of bhakti because they have been given faulty explanations and the sādhanā is not also not fully śāstra-based. Without shruti, smriti, purana, they are having utpata in their life.

A: I agree. In the past, I had often wondered why there were so many problems in some sects. I also reached the same conclusion as you.

Q: Now I am realising that the biggest blunder for a Gauḍiya Vaiṣṇava is to ignore Goswamis’ literature.

yaḥ śāstra-vidhim utsṛjya
vartate kāma-kārataḥ
na sa siddhim avāpnoti
na sukhaṁ na parāṁ gatim

I feel that this verse is the fundamental answer for devotees’ problems. Learning śāstra by trespassing Goswamis is simply created havoc in spiritual lives of people.

A: Again, I agree 100%.

  1. And what’s even worse and more laughable is that the “Varnashrama dharma” that is parroted by the Neo-Gaudiya cults is itself a mental concoction invented by themselves and having very little basis in the actual smriti literatures.
