Babaji is teaching Bhaṭṭi-kāvyam

Babaji has begun teaching Bhaṭṭi-kāvyam this month. Bhaṭṭi-kāvyam is a fascinating work, called a ‘mahā-kāvyam’, composed in the 7th century. Read here for information from wikipedia.

Composed in Sanskrit, the mahā-kāvyam is designed to teach the usage of Pāṇini’s sūtras for making words; but all this is put in the context of a story on the Rāmāyāṇa. The work is formidable in its scholarship.

Interestingly, Babaji is lecturing on Bhaṭṭi-kāvya in the context of Śrī Harināmāmṛta vyākaraṇa. That is, he explains the derivation of each word based on Harināmāmṛta-vyākaraṇa sūtras. Babaji taught Harināmāmṛta-vyākaraṇam for nearly four years and completed it in April. Now he is helping students revise what they have learned.

I am often approached by students new to Jiva institute for advice on how to learn Sanskrit. My suggestion is to learn Harināmāmṛta-vyākaraṇam. The lectures are available at learning.jiva.org for purchase. I believe this is an easier way to learn Sanskrit than learning Pāṇini’s sūtras. Also, Harināmāmṛta-vyākaraṇam is full of the names of Hari, and is therefore far more satisfying.

While newcomers may find Bhaṭṭi-kāvyam difficult going, I still think it can be useful. I plan to write some articles based on Babaji’s lectures on Bhaṭṭi-kāvyam, which may perhaps makes the material a little more accessible.

  1. Hare Krishna
I have recently heard two opinions. These two opinions are as follows:

First, Krishna has 64 qualities and each soul can fully manifest 50 out of the total 64 qualities when the soul goes back to the abode of God.

Second opinion: Whenever a soul enters the eternal abode of God then God gives him all his powers, riches and all qualities except one thing i.e. creating the universe, controlling the universe and destroying the universe.

1.So the first question that arises is whether Krishna has infinite qualities or only 64. Or here we are talking about the sixty-four main qualities among Krishna’s infinite qualities.

2.The second question is which of the two opinions do you think is correct.

    • So where did you hear them? What is their sastriya basis?

There are no general answers to such types of questions. For example someone may get Sarsti type of mukti, another may get Brahma sayujya.

Now Sri Vaisnavism does not accept Brahma sayjujya as a valid mukti. So it depends on the school. Each school has its own specific viewpoints.

The soul does not have qualities of Sri Krsna so it cannot ‘manifest’ them. The qualities it has in Bhagavan’s abode which are similar to Bhagavan can only be endowed by Bhagavan’s Svarupa sakti.

  2. Hare Krishna If you read Srila Prabhupada’s teachings in ISKCON, it is common knowledge that 64 qualities are fully manifested in Krishna. Similarly, Vishnu has 60 qualities, Shiv has 55 qualities and Brahma has 50 qualities. As far as I know, a living being has 50 qualities and that too of Krishna.

    • Sri Rupa Goswami mentions the number of qualities in BRS for Bhagavan. But the statement that a jiva has 50 of Bhagavan’s qualities intrinsic to it is not present in BRS to my knowledge.

The Jiva’s qualities are discussed in detail by Sri Jiva Goswami in the Paramatma Sandarbha. I have many articles on this site that explore those teachings, as well as refute the idea that the Jiva has Bhagavan’s qualities intrinsic to it which it manifests. Check the articles that refute the concept of dormant prema.

About Bhaktivedanta swami’s writings, it is best to approach Iskcon followers for an explanation or confirmation.

But this is normal in ISKCON. Anyway, whatever qualities appear in us, they appear only by the grace of Krishna.
